In Sudan, songs resound everywhere. Inside and outside of every home, in the street, in the fields, at the shore of the Nile and at the beach... Singing is as important to every Sudanese as breathing, and children assimilate the sounds and rhythms since they are in their mother's womb.
Rooted in the rich history and African identity of Sudan, and the importance of social interaction and gathering, storytelling, the proliferation of knowledge and the expression of joy and grievances easily transited from oral transmission to literature and amazing poetry.
Inspired by nature, the contrasting colors of the deep blue rivers and sea, the yellow-brown soil, green plants and red flowers, Sudan's artists convert their creativity into vibrant paintings, decorations, graphics and handicrafts, as have done their ancestors for thousands of years.
Today's Sudan, and more specifically the Nubian Nile Valley, its steady flow of clean water, fertile soil and its protective mountain ranges, provided the ideal environment for humans to thrive for around two million years, to develop tools, knowledge and science and ultimately create an advanced society and civilization.
For heritage to be transmitted from generation to generation, over thousands of years, a tightly-knit society, interacting communities, a sense of belonging and dignity, and well defined moral principles, mutual respect and consideration for their elders are indispensable. That is what underlies Sudanese traditions, up to this day.
